Great improvements to the trail on the Taylor Park side as you near the top. Frenchy's is their local restaurant and shouldn't be passed up on an empty stomach. Ran the trail from Tincup to St. Elmo. . Fun trail. St. Elmo was settled in 1878 and grew to a population of about 2,000. Nothing too intense for a decent stock vehicle. Tincup Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3.710m (12,171ft) above the sea level, located on the boundary of Chaffee and Gunnison counties, in the U.S. state of Colorado. Seconding what others have said, the route is in much worse shape than last year at about the same time. By the late afternoon, there wasn't a lot of traffic on the trail, but there were still a lot of people at Mirror Lake. Tin Cup, which has to be the best name anyone ever named a town, was named something else once, and the post office said there was another one, so they changed it. This trail is beautiful. Boulders are much more pronounced, not a smooth spot anywhere except on the pass itself. It was quite busy, but it has a fun little rocky section on the Tincup side of the pass pretty close to the summit. I am a member of the Mile-Hi Jeep Club, and currently own a customized '05 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (LJ) with a 5.7 Hemi swap. The old section is most difficult, as appears seldom run as very overgrown. Cutting through two National Forests and crossing the Continental Divide at 12,154 feet, this off-road trail offers beautiful high alpine views while following the same route used by miners and prospectors searching for their fortunes in the late 1800's. Plenty of traffic and ATVs, but plenty of spots to pull off. But this area is over run with people on four wheelers. We didn't take the Old Tincup route, as time was running short. About 3 hours to make the trip in a Jeep JK Rubicon Unlimited on 33" tires. Mirror lake crossing was low with no water on the trail. Ran in 4 high and did not need 4 low or lockers. I'm not really sure whether my track fell all or in part of the more difficult "Old Tincup" route but when I compare to other trails that fall into the 3-5 range (Cinnamon and Engineer Passes, Bull Park, etc), the size of the rocks doesn't feel like it deserves any less than a 5 - at least if you're going up from Tincup. This is one of my favorites! Very noisy and dusty. The pass isn't much farther. Still very pretty and Mirror Lake campground is awesome. Red Cliff - A tiny mountain town just past Minturn on US 24 from Vail to Leadville. Travel west on CR 162 for 16 miles to the junction with CR 292, just east of the historic townsite of St. Elmo. Easier than I remember from years past. Give it a 3 of 6 difficulty rating - down from a 4 or 5 before. Mirror lake was the highlight. no locker
Main Street intersects with major forest road 765. Very rocky! Did it on a dual sport Yamaha XT225 and a Honda 250 Rally. During the summer there is one general store with limited provisions but you have to get either a t-shirt or a hat that says Tin Cup on it, because really, you know everyone is going to ask you about it. I did not hit any skid plates or my rock sliders during the adventure. We were able to get the rough the water crossings at Mirror Lake just fine. Either way, it's not just a skip and a jump. Beautiful trail from St Elmo up to pass. From there, you can return the way you came. Forest Order PSICC-2019-19 has now been rescinded. You could get up to Mirror Lake in a car with some clearance (Subaru), but beyond that I was glad to have 4 wheel drive and solid clearance. Then road reappears and nice trip into lake and finally Tincup. Right goes to Taylor Park and Cottonwood Pass back to Buena Vista. Just like most of the lakes in this area, Mirror Lake is well stocked with fish. At that point, it was easily 4'-5' deep. There is also fat biking here on groomed snow mobile trails. A great day. There are many great camping opportunities along Tincup Pass Road and the area is quite popular with campers. We were able to make it as far as we did because the snow was still very hard and our single digit tire pressures allowed us to float on top of the snow.
